Hi everyone, I'm Raesha, and welcome to my blog! Today, we’re diving into one of my favorite fashion styles—western wear. As someone who grew in the western way of life, I’ve always been drawn to the rugged charm and timeless look of western-inspired outfits. So, let’s get into how to style western clothing in a way that's both practical and fashionable!

The Origins of Western Wear

Western wear was initially designed for practical use by cowboys in the American West. Durable jeans, rugged boots, wide-brimmed hats, and button-down shirts weren’t just for show—they were essential for those long days spent on horseback. Over time, these garments became not only a symbol of practicality but also of the western lifestyle, representing freedom, independence, and a deep connection to the land.

Key Patterns and Fabrics in Western Wear

When it comes to dressing in a western style, there are a few standout patterns and fabrics that instantly elevate your look. Here are some of the key elements:

  • Aztec Patterns: These are bold and geometric, giving any outfit an unmistakable western vibe.
  • Fringe: Whether it’s on a jacket or a handbag, fringe adds movement and a touch of old-west flair.
  • Suede and Leather: Classic materials in western fashion, especially when it comes to jackets, belts, and boots.
  • Cow Print and Animal Print: Think cowhide patterns or cheetah print—both can make a statement in western-inspired outfits.
  • Embroidery and Denim: Denim is a staple in any western wardrobe, while embroidery adds a feminine touch.

My Go-To Boutiques for Western Fashion

One of my favorite online boutiques for western wear is Filly Flair. They have an incredible selection of women’s clothing that fits perfectly with the western style. While they aren’t sponsoring me (I just genuinely love their stuff!), I’ve been shopping there for about five years now, and I’ve never been disappointed.

Another great store is Cavender's, a Texas-based chain that carries everything from western wear to boots. I’ve found some great pieces from them over the years as well. Again, not sponsored—just a big fan!

Styling a Western-Inspired Outfit

For today’s outfit, I decided to mix and match a few western elements. I started with a bulky sweatshirt and layered it with a long duster, which creates a nice, laid-back look. Adding a belt with large turquoise conchos helps define my waist and prevents me from getting lost in the oversized layers. A flat-brimmed hat, a classic western accessory, completes the look along with a pair of flare jeans and boots. This combination feels comfortable and chic, perfect for a day out.

If you want to make this outfit more streamlined, simply remove the belt and hat, and tuck the front of the sweatshirt into your jeans. This keeps the outfit casual but still stylish.

Mixing Streetwear and Western Vibes

One of my favorite ways to style tight shorts is by pairing them with an oversized t-shirt. This combination gives off more of a streetwear vibe, but adding a Najo pearl necklace and a distressed cap brings a western twist to the outfit. When wearing oversized clothes, it's easy to get lost in the outfit, which is why wearing tight shorts is a great way to create balance. The necklace also adds balance by drawing attention to your face and away from the baggy shirt. Grey sneakers definitely enhance the streetwear vibe, and they tie the whole outfit together perfectly!

Keeping it Simple

Accessories are key in western fashion, and I like to keep them simple yet impactful. In this outfit, I added a Navajo pearl necklace to balance the look. The necklace not only draws attention to the neck and face but also breaks up the outfit in a way that creates balance and harmony.

I also love layering a button-down shirt over a graphic tee. This trick draws attention to your waist when you tuck in the tee, helping to create that classic hourglass shape. Adding a western cap or a unique belt can make your outfit pop even more. I finished the look with sneakers for a laid-back vibe.

All the Fringe

As I mentioned earlier, certain patterns are key to western style, such as Aztec prints and fringe. In this outfit, I incorporated both. Baseball tees are great because you can wear them on their own or layer them, which is what I did here. I added an oversized denim jacket with an Aztec print. Since the colors of the baseball tee are so soft, they blend nicely with the jacket.

To elevate the look, I paired it with a fringe skirt. I also tucked the baseball tee into the skirt to draw attention to my waist and prevent getting lost in the oversized jacket. The leather necklace serves two purposes: it breaks up the outfit and adds a bit of edge. Lastly, these heels are a perfect way to tie the look together, being subtle yet adding a touch of elegance.

Conclusion

Western wear is all about combining practicality with style. Whether you’re going for a full western-inspired outfit or just adding a few western touches to your everyday look, the key is to balance textures and patterns while staying true to your personal style. Don’t forget to check out local boutiques for unique pieces—you never know what gems you might find!
